You Wanted It—You Got It: Voice Chat in the Xbox Dashboard!

This fall you'll be able to talk to all your Xbox Live Friends right from the Xbox Dashboard! Xbox Live subscribers have been asking for a way to talk to each other outside of games since the launch of the service way back in November, and Voice Chat is just what they've been waiting for.

Voice Chat allows you to send and accept invitations to chat from the Xbox Dashboard. So let's say you sprained your thumb in a marathon MechAssault session but want to keep in touch with your Xbox Live posse. Simply set up a Voice Chat session from the Xbox Live Dashboard and send chat invites to your buddies. They work just like game invites. Chats can accommodate a maximum of 16 chatters (depending on your network performance, of course), though realistically 16 voices babbling at once might make it a bit tough to follow the gist of the conversation. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Another benefit of Voice Chat is that you will no longer need to have the same games as your buddies in order to chat with them. Maybe you're a hardcore sports nut and one of your Friends doesn't know a hockey puck from a basketball, but loves games like Ghost Recon and Soldier of Fortune II. You don't have to compromise on which game to play in order to talk to each other—just set up a Voice Chat session and you're both happy. Not to make any sweeping gender-based generalizations, but if you're a guy who mostly plays games where you can blow stuff up, there may be some females of the species spending a lot of time in Tetris Worlds or Phantasy Star Online. This would be a good way to chat 'em up without having to blow 'em up. Know what we mean?

More coolness about the Voice Chat feature: these are not random, open-to-anyone chat sessions. You invite your Friends and they can accept your invite and even bring one of their Friends with our Friend of a Friend feature. It's a great way to meet new gamers and not have to worry about creeps. Unless you've got creeps on your Friends List intentionally—and in that case you're on your own.

We're really excited about this upcoming feature and just want to say thanks for the great idea. Keep 'em coming.
