Xbox Media Player b6 released
Posted by Theendisgone at 0:24 AM

Here is what RUNTiME and duo have that's new in the latest edition of Xbox Media Player.

·  Improved support for DVD-R/W, CD-RW playback.

·  Seeking for AVI files. With the analog buttons you
can control how fast you seek.

·  Divx 5.0 and 5.02 Pro support. This includes B frames and qpel motion compensation.

·  MSMpeg4v2 and MSMpeg4v1 support.

·  Skin parameters are in a new and separate .xml file. This will make dropping in new skins much easier.

·  Network configurable via .xml config files. This
includes static IP/EVOX/DHCP support.

·  Anamorphic aspect ratio buf fix (16:9).

·  Subtitles. We only support SubRip .srt format right
now. There are conversion tools out there, though.

·  Local and Remote Directories supported.

·  DVD tray auto-eject/close.

·  New MMX/SSE optimized motion compensation routines. For the curious, its a combined IDCT and MC copy/add. Several codecs have support for this opimized function but I believe we're the first to implement it in MMX/SSE.

·  Launch XBEs.

·  Dashboard replacement mode.

·  AVI Preemphasis support added. Previously, AVI files with preemphasis would play out of sync.

·  XStream Web Front-end.

What didn't get finished:

·  Mpeg-2 video. Its mostly all done it just isn't stable yet.

·  There's already talk of a B6.1 though just for Mpeg-2.

·  AC3 digital output.

·  MPEG seeking.

Remote controller should be supported also, along with fast forward and rewind, but there was no mention in the readme. You can check out the Xboxmedia player web-site here.

"Probably second last release of invaders, hope you enjoy it.

Some people are having problems with screen being cut off, this is because your television does not fully

Features added in Ver 2:

·  Sound is now working - Thanks chossy

·  WMA support

·  Attack Powerups

·  Extra Lives

·  Motherships

·  Another Enemy Type

Fixes : Gross looking explosions. XBOX's Z-Buffer work 'slightly' different the the PC DirectX equivalent."

Xbox Only £159.99
Posted by Theendisgone at 12:40 PM

News Sources: Xbox.com & Official Xbox Magazine

"In reaction to Sony's just-announced PS2 price cut to £169.99, Microsoft has gone one step further by offering the world's most powerful console for £159.99 from tomorrow 30th August."

"European gamers have even more to be celebrating heading into this Christmas shopping season as Microsoft today announced that the European price of its Xbox video game system will be reduced to an estimated street price of €249.99/£159.99, effective from Friday, 30th August."

"The video games industry is more robust than ever this year, and new consoles and games are expected to dominate Christmas wish lists," said Sandy Duncan, Vice President, Xbox Europe. "Xbox is extremely well-positioned to be at the top of those lists because it's the best value. The intense power and gaming experiences consumers get with Xbox is simply unsurpassed."

"Duncan pointed out that only with Xbox this holiday can consumers get a choice of over 200 game titles (with over 300 currently in development) representing the most advanced movie quality graphics, sound effects and music ever experienced on a video game console, plus a built-in hard disc for the most intense gaming experiences and a built-in broadband adapter for instant online gaming with Xbox Live, a new online gaming service launching soon in Europe. "Best value is not just about price," said Duncan. "It's price, plus the most advanced hardware features, plus a killer games portfolio all in one package."

Thanks to Lee Dicks & Big Dave for the heads up.

EvoX Menu Editor
Posted by Theendisgone at 17:59 PM

News Source: XboxDeveloper.NET

Just a little program for Windows which allows you to connect to your XBox to edit the \\\'menu.ini\\\' file used by Evolution-X dashboard. The program parses the \\\'menu.ini\\\' file and creates a nice tree view in the GUI. You can easily drag and drop items around, add new, delete, modify, etc. There are commands to alphabetically sort a section or the entire menu tree. There is a command to automatically add games from your \\\'AutoAddItem\\\' directories into the menu file, so you can edit the default titles they are given by Evolution-X dashboard, and can sort them, etc. When you\\\'re all done, the program will reconstruct a new \\\'menu.ini\\\' file and send it back to your XBox. Of course, you can also use it to work with local \\\'menu.ini\\\' files (i.e. for buring to DVDR). It\\\'s nothing earth shattering, but for the slightly anal types, like myself, who don\\\'t always like the names that \\\'AutoAddItem\\\' assigns, and who like to keep their menus in alphabetical order, it\\\'s a real time saver.

Linear buffering code (for cd-rw/dvd-r playback)
New MMX/SSE optimized motion compensation routines
Xvid color bug fix
Anamorphic aspect ratio bug fix (16:9)
Customizable aspect-ratio control

XboxDeveloper.Net Grand Opening

 Posted  by Theendisgone at 16:26

After a few months and lots of effort, we are proud to present XboxDeveloper.Net!

XboxDeveloper.Net was created with the intent to keep the Xbox community up to date about all of the latest news regarding "homebrew" and hobbyist software for the Xbox.

All Xbox developers and programmers are encouraged to register their tools, games, apps, and other projects in the "software library." For projects without a home, you are welcome to make a home here. We have tried to assemble some basic useful tools for software developers such as automated bug tracking, FAQs, etc. For projects with a home, feel free to simply register and leave a link to your home page so that visitors can easily find information about your work.

A special feature of XboxDeveloper.Net is the ability for registered developers to log in and post news updates directly to the XboxDeveloper.Net front page. In this way, the community can easily keep up to date and developers can let us know quickly and easily about their work.

As this is a new site scripted from scratch, there will likely be a few minor bugs here and there; we have extensively tested the site, but nothing is ever perfect. My siliconice @ siliconice.net email account should be back online later this week. In the mean time, you can email "Roho" about any bugs you encounter, check the "contact" page on XBD. From the "About" page at XBD:

XboxDeveloper.Net was founded in August 2002 by "SiliconIce" to provide a centralized source of information and news about hobbyist or "homebrew" development for the Microsoft Xbox console.

XboxDeveloper.Net strongly supports the development of legal and freely usable methods for writing custom software for the Xbox. Projects such as Xbox-Linux and OpenXDK will allow us to freely and publicly distribute compiled software for the Xbox. For legal reasons, we cannot host or link to any binaries for projects created with Microsoft's proprietary Xbox SDK.

Have fun and Happy Hacking!

Scripting and design of XboxDeveloper.Net by "Roho".

It's been a lot of fun and work getting this site set up; I hope you guys enjoy it :-)

Doom 3 On Xbox

 Posted  by Theendisgone at 00:25

John Carmack confirms that the graphically impressive first-person shooter will come out for the Xbox and will match the visual fidelity of the PC version.

Id Software had previously expressed interest in doing an Xbox version of its upcoming first-person shooter, but hadn't confirmed that there would be a console version of the game. Today during his keynote at QuakeCon, id's John Carmack said that the Xbox is the only console platform that id is "completely committed" to releasing Doom III on. Carmack further commented that the Xbox version will have the "full graphics fidelity" of the PC version, which made a major debut at this year's E3, where it won a number of awards.

Id Software has said that work on the Xbox version won't start until the PC game is complete. At QuakeCon 2002, id expressed hope that the game would be done before next year's E3 in May. For more information, check out our previous coverage of the PC game.

We know how easy ports can be to Xbox, they shouldn't have a problem :-)

Bunnie To Present Paper

 Posted  by Theendisgone at 01:43

Bunnie to Present Paper - SiliconIce @ 01:43 CST
Here's a clip from an article at the EFF.

San Francisco - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is pleased to announce that former MIT doctoral student Andrew "Bunnie" Huang will present a paper explaining a security flaw in the Microsoft Xbox (TM) videogame system.

Huang will present his paper, "Keeping Secrets in Hardware: the Microsoft X-BOX Case Study," at 5:25 p.m. PDT on August 13, 2002, at the 2002 Workshop on Cryptographic Hardware and Embedded Systems (CHES 2002) in Redwood City, California (Aug. 13-15, 2002).

The Xbox security system is intended to allow people to play only videogames authorized by Microsoft. Huang's paper "shows how a person could defeat that system with a small hardware investment," said MIT Professor Hal Abelson, one of Huang's advisors. "More importantly, the paper relates the security vulnerability to a general design flaw shared by other high-profile security systems such as the government's Clipper Chip and the movie industry's Contents Scrambling System (CSS) for DVD players."

Halo 2 Confirmed + Screenshots

Halo 2 Confirmed + Screenshots - iretch @ 19:29 CST
Not exactly xbox hacking news, but i'm sure this is of interest to most everyone :)

Halo 2, a sci-fi action/first-person shooter game, is a full sequel to the best-selling original and will continue the story of the Master Chief, a genetically enhanced supersoldier who is the only man that has successfully defied the Covenant, a coalition of alien races on a murderous march toward Earth. Halo 2 surpasses its predecessor both in graphical beauty and combat intensity. The Master Chief and his marine allies return to battle the full complement of Covenant forces, as well as new enemies who have not yet revealed themselves. Halo 2 also expands the Master Chief's already substantial arsenal with powerful new weapons, many pried from the twitching claws of defeated enemies, as well as more than twice as many drivable vehicles for exploring vast landscapes or speeding into battle. In addition to its epic single-player campaign, Halo 2 will be playable online through Xbox Live.

X-Ecuter And Xbox Live Article

 Posted  by Theendisgone at 17:34

Not much new info, but they did use a quote from my email reply to one of their questions :-)

Updated: I think this article was updated with the following, as previously I was fairly certain it said Microsoft had not been reached for comment. Either way:

A Microsoft representative said Xbox Live would not include specific diagnostics to detect mod chips but would employ "military-grade security" to prevent hacking and other threats. The representative declined to specify any action Microsoft was taking against mod chip makers but said the company would vigorously protect its intellectual property.

XB Media Player B6

I'll post here to let everyone know whats happening with the current development builds.

Divx 5.0!!! Woohoo!

I also have finished MsMpeg4v2 support.

I'm doing a lot towards optimizing the video codecs to speed them up. These include new SSE optimizations. I have just finished a new version if IDCT that combines the most common Motion Compensation functions all into one big optimized function. It gave a noticable improvement in video decoding time.

So we're still having fun working on the latest and greatest. I'll add more posts here as I get new things working.

No X-Ecuter Upgrade

Posted  by Theendisgone at 19:49 PM

We have been "looking" at a flash upgradeable design (connect to LPT port) but this will not be any kind of add-on and will be a seperate product designed for those that want to play around with the inferior BIOS files available online, if and when we ever decide to do it. This will be similar to the openbox but would be much cheaper and will not have any BIOS programmed to it. Remember if there is any news on X-ecuter - don't beleive it till you read it here. If we are working on something as opposed to just looking at something we will let you know.

I saw the link at Xbox-Scene.

So I just thought I slap this little tool together for ...
that it may help you to develop more easy ... just include
it in your build process or makefile with the params and of you go ..

Example:
Xend0r.exe "192.168.1.111" "/E/dev/myApp/" "myApp.xbe"

PS2 On Xbox ? I Dont Think So...

Posted  by Theendisgone at 14:46 PM

I am not familiar with this source...so I will assume this info is not true:

Ever since Bleem was able to make your Dreamcast play Playstation games, you had to wonder what other emulators could be made. It would be nice not have to buy multiple systems. You can already run DVD’s on most gaming platforms. With this in mind a new company called Disis Alye Software has reverse-engineered the Playstation 2 against their lawyers’ advice and created a PS2 emulator for the Xbox. At first I was very skeptical, since the Bleem games were not that great and had many technical problems. Sony sued the hell out of Bleem and eventually they went out of business. The weird thing is; I think Sony helped DAS make the emulator to begin with. Why you ask? Well, the answer is simple. It costs Sony a lot of money to produce the PS2 and it’s considered a “loss leader.” Sony can’t cut a deal with Microsoft to make games on the Xbox, so this is the next best thing.
DAS flew me out to their New Orleans HQ to beta-test the new product. I was stunned to see how well it worked. You pop in the X-Station CD and you are then prompted to change to whatever PS2 game you want. All PS2 games work to perfection and while none of the games are enhanced for Xbox capabilities, it is none the less very quick and cool. You also do not need a memory card as the X-Station takes a few megs off the hard drive for its own use. No more memory cards! The first game I tried was Gran Turismo 3 in Hi-Res Mode and it was brilliant. The Xbox supports HDTV and it allows all PS2 games to be converted to a higher resolution. They did not have any VGA compatibility at test time but said there was a small chance that they could offer this in final release. Sound was perfect to my ears with the 5:1 surround-sound on full blast.
The question remains whether Microsoft will sue DAS. Because the company is so new, that coverage is slim and we were one of the first to get to the story. I assume that by the time you read this the whole industry will be in an uproar. Microsoft will sue DAS and DAS will be sued by Sony and Sony will sue Microsoft. Who knows how the justice department will look at this? New legislation banning reverse-engineering was passed in the last couple years, but the laws haven’t been tested vigorously by the courts. One can only hope that, if the X-Station does get banned like Napster and Bleem, the source code will “leak” onto the net for everyone to download. Imagine that.

This story is so full of holes, I don't know where to start. Sony profits on PS2 last I read. MS has to approve and sign software, so it's extremely unlikely it would ever be released legally. If there is an official release, MS won't sue since they would have approved it! In addition, the computing power of a PS2 is so close to an Xbox, it would seem real-time emulation is close to impossible. And reverse-engineering is not banned either. Hmm...nice hoax guys.

update Hmm..."Disis Alye Software"--> "This is a lie" perhaps? *sigh* what people do for a joke.

boXplorer

Posted  by Theendisgone at 03:25 PM

Here's an update for those using boXplorer...

I've been working hard on the next version and there are some big changes which I belive people will like

Here are the new features in v0.95 :

- Introduction of file operations making boXplorer a real file manager :
Copy multiple files/folders.
Move multiple files/folders.
Delete multiple files/folders.
Rename single file or folder.
Create new folder.
- Main Menu with file operations and other features (activate with WHITE button)
- Mark files for file operations (press X)
- "Mark All", "Clear Marks" and "Inverse Marks" in main menu to bulk-mark files.
- Panel A and Panel B - used like in Norton Commander or Windows Commander to select
source and destination for file operations (toggle with left thumb button or trigger buttons).
- Select Drive function now shows free and total space on each drive.
- Button layout changed slightly to make room for new features.

All features are currently implemented and work nicely but need a bit of testing and polishing up for release... expect a release soon

Nvidia Comments On MCPX

Posted  by Theendisgone at 10:12 PM

We never blamed Xbox.

What we said about Xbox was that we reached a volume discount milestone, further reducing the margins. And that we will be taking an inventory write off in Q2 related to the amount of Xbox MCPs that were made obsolete when MSFT transitioned to a new security code (by way of the MIT hacker) and excess in nForce chipsets that we built in anticipation of higher demand of Athlon-based PCs.

Derek Perez
PR Director
Nvidia

Hmm, "MIT hacker." Perhaps Microsoft is more on the ball than we all realize; simply changing keys would mean we just need to aquire the new one. Perhaps they patched up their scheme a bit more than that, perhaps not. For sure, changing keys will at least make getting compatible modchips more tricky; programmable mods should not have much problem though.

Here's a clip from Bunnie's paper for a refresher:

A compromise solution to the problem is to simply not trust any bus in the system.
In this case, the secret boot block might employ a digital signature protocol, such as
Authenticode R , using public key algorithms and one-way hashes. [10] Then, all secu-rity
rests in the secrecy of the private key, and the strength of the public key algorithm.
In order to prevent employee leaks from spreading a private key, a system similar to the
BBN SignAssure TM could be used to manage the key so that no human ever has knowl-edge
of the private key. The principal drawback of this method is that it requires extra
silicon area to be spent on storing a larger secret boot block, as it is probably difficult,
if not impossible, to code a full public key encryption algorithm plus key storage and
hardware initialization code within 512 bytes.

The above suggestion does not prevent someone from eavesdropping and obtaining
the plaintext of the operating system code, but it does effectively defeat any attempt
to run original code. The public key scheme could be defeated, however, by a mech-anism
that snoops the main memory bus and patches plaintext in main memory. As
discussed previously, this approach is possible, but difficult; however, the tenacity of
an attacker should not be underestimated. For example, a known attack on the Sony
Playstation2 console was developed that is rumored to work by dynamically patching
its high-performance RAMBUS memory system. The difficulty of a memory patch at-tack
could be increased by using a simple periodic hash and check of the critical code
regions in memory.

Buffer overrun exploits are also a point of weakness, and they work regardless of
the secret boot protocol. An attacker sniffing an insecure bus could obtain the de-crypted
kernel code and analyze it for weaknesses. However, any machine architecture
that employs guarded pointers [11] is much more difficult, if not impossible, to attack
using buffer overruns. A fast, efficient guarded pointer scheme with a simple hardware
implementation is described in [12]. This scheme can easily be adapted to work in a
64-bit architecture.
